Hi everyone,
For most of us navigating the challenges of this pandemic, it can seem a bit like a play in three acts — only in this case, all the acts are happening at once. You are a parent, you are a teacher and you are a professional — all at the same time. Understandably, things don’t always go smoothly. The novelty of having school at home may be wearing a bit thin. So getting everything under control since the get go was my number 1 priority. It might come a little late but I thought I would share what really works for me. So here’s my top 3 tips to help your kids stay focused on school during the quarantine:
1- Keep your child day structured:
That one I must admit was an easy one for me. Having had twins, one of the greatest pieces of advice the nurses at the hospital gave me was to “keep them on a schedule” so I don’t go crazy. And it worked. People around me always have an opinion (that they keep to themselves – I just know they do) on my parenting method when it comes to rules and schedules. I have 3 kids and they are always on a schedule…. So it was easy for me to keep things going smoothly with school activities. Wake Up, Visit the restroom, Breakfast, a little TV, a snack and then 1-2 hour of school activities. As simple as 1,2,3.
2- Make learning fun
I set up a mini “classroom” workspace and I try to make it fun. I sometimes spice things up by having them move to different rooms (not that the twins care) in the house for different subjects or “class periods.” I also reward my children for their work and it works every time: It can be a piece of candy, something they have been asking for but I have been saying “no” just because I am the parent (lol) etc.… It’s important to accept that the child’s learning is very different right now, and that teachers are still learning too, as they work to adapt their classrooms as quickly as possible. Create a question board, and don’t hesitate to contact teachers as needed during office hours with any questions you have.
3- Keep your child focused when learning at home
Other than the reward system, I asked Aby to create a personal goal that she would like to accomplish by the end of the school year. It can be anything or maybe something they normally wouldn’t have time for, but now they do. And work on the goal daily/weekly. For me, right now we are working on Father’s Day, new garden project, Online celebration for the end of the school year etc. We have short, mid and long term goals 😉 because having just 1 was “too boring” said the “queen”.

So this is what has been working for me over the past 3 months. Of course I am not perfect, sometimes I feel overwhelmed as I also need time to focus on my professional life but we manage to make it work. It’s almost the end of the school year and we have been doing great. Hooray! So how was /is homeschooling on your side. Any challenges? Tips? Comment below and let me know.
Thanks for Stopping by.

Did I miss something? You said you have 3 kids, but I only see 2. You say you have twins, were they not in any of the photos together?

You are right – Addison (the youngest of the 2) has a twin brother, Audrick. I said it on my Tuesday post that He did not want to take pictures. I guess he was not in the mood. He was crying like he saw the devil or something. I gave up…. But I have 1 picture of him crying in the previous post.

If we ended up spending part of the year at home again this coming school year, we are going to set up a learning space: not just laying around on the floor and couch to do school work. A little more structure would be nice for my boys.

Good idea – I turned her art & craft corner into her school desk and things have been going smoothly. With that said, I am so not ready to continue homeschooling 😉

This dress is perfect for summer. You look stunning and comfortable in it. The color and print scream vacation. Well, it seems we will spend our vacation in the yard or on the deck this year.
