Hi everyone,
If you are in your 30’s or over, you are probably familiar with the 90’s fashion trends. I personally remember this period all to well. As a kid, then a teenager, I really loved some of the trends of that period and still think about them because of all the emotions and stories that came along with them. My mom was a very conventional lady that believe that a girl should wear tutu dresses and lace socks all day however I was still able to rock some of those trends mostly in my teenage years: The black choker, the small backpack, the wedges shoes, the block heeled sandals/shoes, the flared and bottom bell jeans, the hoop earrings, the overalls and the list goes on. Just made me realize that I wasn’t that bad after all. Needless to say that I am more enthousiast to wear the 90’s trend than the 70’s trends that are both back on trend because of all the memories I treasured that come along with 90’s fashion. Today, I am sharing 5 of the 90’s fashion trend to wear in 2020 with a modern twist.
To wear the ’90s fashion trend today you need to rework the styles a little bit so that they are relevant in today’s culture and also age appropriate (considering that I was 6 in 1990). Instead of copying looks exactly as they were in the ’90s, recreate them in a modern and updated way. The trick is to capture that “too cool to care” attitude of the ’90s while looking fresh and on-trend. To do so, blend classic ’90s pieces like crop tops or chokers into your everyday wardrobe with skinny jeans and block heeled shoes. With that said, here’s my top 5 things to wear in 2020 inspired by the 90’s fashion trends:
1- Flared and wide-leg jeans: They are one of the most flattering styles of jeans for women. The modern flare adds a graceful, curved silhouette that can accentuate your feminine figure. The flare also adds length to your legs because it doesn’t cut off your natural lines by stopping at the ankles as skinny jeans do. Depending of your body shape, you can go mid or high rise.
2- Overalls: I love jumpsuits so of course, overalls make the list. First of all is the fit. Try to find onesie with adjustable straps, so there is no gapping in the crotch area. If you want to try on loose-fit and roomy overalls, then you better add an ultra feminine shirt underneath. Think of lace tops, or the ones with frilly or sheer details. If you think you look like a toddler in overalls, then you better choose grown-up accessories and add something elegant, like a blazer with gold jewelry.
3- Crop Top: These midriff-baring tops were an essential fashion item for the ladies living in the ’90s and they are on-trend once again. Today, you can relive the best fashion from the decade by pairing a crop top with a pair of high-waisted jeans (mom, skinny or flare jeans). Crop top and mom jeans are a favorite of celebrities and street style stars alike. To make the look modern, just swap cropped camisoles for short t-shirts, sweaters and tank tops (high waisted so we don’t show to much of midriff – just enough to mimic the style).
4- Scrunchies: Scrunchies were a favorite fashion item of the decade and completed many outfits. From simple satin styles to glamorous velvet designs, scrunchies were available in a range of options and could be worn with a ponytail, bun or pigtails.
5- Jewelry: Chokers, hoop earrings, chain necklace
- Chokers: Go with with gold tone dainty choker. Pair your choker with other necklaces in a similar finish for a layered look. You can do the same with pearls.
- Hoop earrings: Hoop earrings make me think of messy high bun and red lipstick. It is the perfect. It is the perfect accessory for a casual look. For the office, switch them to some huggies.
- Chain necklaces: Wear your gold chain necklaces with simple tank tops, over T-shirts, or with dresses. It’s the versatile jewelry you can wear every single day with anything. In fact, it adds that something special to a formal outfit and makes it look classy. Some people prefer wearing gold chains for prestige. They feel that it makes them look classy. Simply remember not to go too oversize.
So what are the 90’s style you are glad they are back. Let me know in the comment section below. And remember, stay home and safe.
