6 Steps to Curating your Wardrobe Without Overspending

June 9, 2020 by Moumous |

Hi everyone,

How was your weekend? I noticed that the current situation makes people want to shop more. Whether it is home décor or fashion, I feel like people use shopping as a way to deal with the anxiety of not knowing when everything will be under control and resume their regular activities. It is definitely an opportunity to make an assessment of your style and your wardrobe and make smart choices to improve your overall shopping experience. Shopping with a big-picture plan has its benefits: You buy less, you stop shopping in a panic. You save money by shopping in the off-season. Most importantly, by developing your own rhythm for when and how you shop, you’re reclaiming control. When’s the last time you felt in total control of your wardrobe, and not the other way around? here’s my six-step shopping strategy to minimize overspending:

  • Understand and Assess your style: Can you describe your style in a sentence? If so, then you are one lucky girl. Having a laser-focused style comes in handy to combat impulse shopping. If you need help to know your style, start by identifying pieces in your wardrobe that makes you feel confident and flatter your silhouette. Then try to identify colors that work best for you. Use them as pointers to help you build a functional wardrobe.
  • Create an overall vision and make a list: Michael Kors once said your closet should be 70% meat and potatoes, or staples, and then 30% dessert, or sparkle and shine. Focus on getting the staples right and buying them once, then you can go all out on the dessert pieces.
  • Don’t buy just because it’s cheap: Don’t we all do that? Whenever we see a bargain, we run and get it hoping that we will find either an occasion to wear it or to find ways to make it fit or incorporate in our wardrobe. Most of the time, we ended up losing the money since we never get to wear those pieces or feeling confident while wearing them.

  • Embrace the Idea of Just “the One”: Aim to buy just one item per category. For example, or if one is too limiting, then choose another number that works better for you. The important part is to proactively choose how many you think you need of each item.
  • Shop a lot, buy Few: Don’t just buy the first item that you see or try on. Take the time to compare and contrast by looking at least two other alternatives. I understand some people want to get out of the store as quickly as possible but just grabbing whatever to get out of there is the fast-track to clothes you’re not going to wear.
  • Pitilessly Edit: Your wardrobe will never be perfect. You’re going to make mistakes and sometimes you’re not going to be able to resist the impulse buys because come on, shopping is so much fun. So it’s important to continually assess and purge every season or so. Note why certain items didn’t work for you, and use that knowledge to make better decisions next time.

I've really been editing my closet: the last section I focused on was skirts: so many many striped skirts I wasn't wearing so giving a few away and will rethink the others.

I have fallen victim to buying things just because they are so cheap and I have been trying to stop myself from doing that! I do not need another thing in my already overflowing closet, so I am much pickier about what I buy these days. These are great tips! And I am loving your pretty lace dress. Thanks for linking up!

These are good tips! I've found I've been shopping much less in iso – aside from buying a few more educational things for the kids to support learning at home, I haven't been spending on anything else really!

The white blazer reflects clarity, purpose, and a fresh chapter. And, the gold accents? A reminder that value comes from within, but shines brightest when you carry it with confidence.

For me, power dressing isn’t about looking intimidating, but about embodying authenticity. It’s the art of aligning how you present yourself on the outside with the strength and vision you hold within.

Because when you walk in your truth, style becomes your silent introduction.

Styling is a calling that humbles you. Moments lik Styling is a calling that humbles you. Moments like this, kneeling on the floor, adjusting the delicate strap of a sandal, remind me that elegance isn’t just built in front of mirrors, but in the quiet details no one always sees.

Having the privilege to style fashion designer Stella Jean @stellajean_sj_ during her visit to Haiti @haifex.ht was more than work; it was a reminder of why I do what I do. It’s about service, attention, and the joy of seeing someone step into a look that makes them feel like their best self. The reward? That sparkle in their eyes when they stand tall, ready to take on the world.
