Hi everyone,
Happy Thursday! When trying to look as stylish as possible you want to remember to take the whole outfit – from your shoes to your top and everything in between – into equal consideration. With that said, one of the main style advices you get when it comes to wearing a top and a bottom is to tuck in the shirt as this will make you look very put together. And I 100% agree. However, wearing a shirt untucked can be a really great look for a day or night that is more casual in nature. Today we are talking about how a long-sleeved shirt or blouse can be untucked.
Before we start, let us agree that sometimes the best thing to do is nothing! Don’t tuck your shirt at all leaving it untucked and loose. The reasons for this would be if the shirt has a specific hem like a peplum, a band at the bottom (like my striped sweater below), or something else (like the outfit featured today). Another reason not to tuck would be a long tunic made to be worn out or a peasant style blouse. Alternatively you might just have a pair of pants and top that go best together left alone. Basic rules:
- Do leave your blouse untucked when the shape is made to be that way. (I’ll explain);
- Don’t tuck when your pants are lower rise and will accentuate your hips (not necessarily in the most flattering way).
So back to point 1 above, some blouses can be worn both tucked in or untucked. Any blouse with a round shape at the bottom can be worn untucked. While tucking in your shirt/blouse gives you that polish and sophisticated look; untucking your blouse can make you look as equally sophisticated if the those 3 simple tips are followed:
- Go with a silhouette that flatter your body and accentuate your length (tailoring is key here): top with nice details and embellishments (I like delicate vertical lines)
- Wear the blouse with a pencil skirt, a straight leg trouser – classic pair of pants, or a pair of skinny jeans.
- Wear a nice pair of 4” heels. While wearing a nice pair of flats may seem very comfortable, it will make your assemble look frumpy and we don’t want that.

I will add if you have a simple pencil skirt (baby pink, burgundy, navy blue or red) you can wear a blouse with details and embellishments with high heels (not too high). This will look polish and elegant. Your blouse 🙂
Love the outfit Moumouss!

You need higher than 3" not to look like my "mom" version of it.

Agree with your advice regarding to tuck or not. Much better than the front tuck with shirt tail hanging out which is a sloppy look.
Moumous says
lol – I don't like shirt with a tail. I found them a little too casual for me.

I have been doing the front half tuck for such a long time that I feel like I always do it. But there are some tops much better suited to being untucked. These are great tips. And I am loving this white top on you. It is so fabulous! Thanks for linking up with me.

Love your white (untucked) blouse and the red hair ribbon. Good to have some guidance around tucking and untucking. I find it quite confusing. I generally un-tuck because I can never master that "half tuck" thing. Thanks for joining #WowOnWednesday!

Hello Gail. I hope you will find your way around the "tuck" thing. XO,

That white blouse is so pretty and you're right, it does make such a statement left un-tucked. I've become kind of a default shirt-tucker so this is making me think I should try something different. Also, I love your pretty headband!
Moumous says
Thank you Shea, Glad I can bring you some new perspectives. I am also a shirt-tucker but a blouse like should definitely be worn untucked. Xo,

Good tips! I find being petite a lot of tops can be too long on me so a tuck is needed to stop me looking swamped – but sometimes i like to leave things untucked for a more casual look 🙂
