12 tips to look classy on a budget

November 6, 2020 by Moumous |

Hi everyone,

The most popular question I receive is how to be stylish and look great when you don’t have a lot of money. I don’t believe that money equals style. Your style can happen no matter your income level, it just may take a bit more time or a bit more effort and creativity. Here’s some of my tried and true tips to be stylish and look great, no matter your budget.

  1. Hair style: Get the right hairstyle that fits your face shape. sleek up-dos and tied hair can make you look refined.
  2. Have a structured bag:We might have mentioned it before, but having a structured bag is essential to looking chic and elegant. The best part about structured bags is that it retains a defined shape regardless of how much stuff is in it.
  3. Be Smart with accessories: Nothing will make you more polished, classy and elegant than a pair of diamond studs, an elegant watch and a pair of tasteful sunglasses. Smart accessorizing will take any boring outfit to another level of class and sophistication.

  1. Wear pointed toe heels or flats: Pointed toe heels have an elegant shape that adds a show-stopping element to any outfit. They may not be the most comfortable pair, but even flats look a hundred times more classy than regular rounded flats.
  2. Make sure your clothes fits you well: This is just a kind reminder as we discussed about this many many times
  3. Add a blazer: Add a blazer to a dress, blouse, or even a T-shirt and feel the difference. You’ll instantly feel more powerful and better dressed.

  1. Keep things neutral: By this, we mean to buy more clothing items and shoes in neutral colors. This includes beige, camel, brown, and nude colors. These look classy, elegant, and high-maintenance. In addition, darker colors like navy blue are a good option.
  2. Smell good: One of the basics for looking and feeling classy is to have a  signature scent. It needs to be mild, refreshing, and subtle. The right fragrance leaves a lasting impression on people who are around you.
  3. Buy solids: A solid black dress will look more expensive than a floral. A solid blue top will be more classic than a plaid. Prints can look dated quickly. Prints can fade if not done well. Lower-priced garments often try to replicate runway prints = fake. Also, lower-priced prints aren’t as likely to be matched up, making the cheaper fabrication far more obvious.

  1. Don’t buy fake: don’t buy bags from lower-end designers that are trying desperately to look like another. No monogrammed fabric, no padlocks, no trends replicated right off the runway. This also goes for shoes and accessories.
  2. Shop for need not for want:  Don’t buy just to buy, don’t buy to feel better. Buy to fill wardrobe holes and to look better today and a year from today.
  3. Quality over quantity: Period just because I write about this on the blog all the time.

The white blazer reflects clarity, purpose, and a fresh chapter. And, the gold accents? A reminder that value comes from within, but shines brightest when you carry it with confidence.

For me, power dressing isn’t about looking intimidating, but about embodying authenticity. It’s the art of aligning how you present yourself on the outside with the strength and vision you hold within.

Because when you walk in your truth, style becomes your silent introduction.

Styling is a calling that humbles you. Moments lik Styling is a calling that humbles you. Moments like this, kneeling on the floor, adjusting the delicate strap of a sandal, remind me that elegance isn’t just built in front of mirrors, but in the quiet details no one always sees.

Having the privilege to style fashion designer Stella Jean @stellajean_sj_ during her visit to Haiti @haifex.ht was more than work; it was a reminder of why I do what I do. It’s about service, attention, and the joy of seeing someone step into a look that makes them feel like their best self. The reward? That sparkle in their eyes when they stand tall, ready to take on the world.
