How to dress age appropriately

October 31, 2020 by Moumous |

Hi everyone,

Happy Saturday! I wish you all a happy and blessed weekend. I often receive message and emails from followers, clients and readers looking for advice: “Hello, I’m 50, 45, 60…. what not to wear? or can I wear? Many times, I am asked about how to dress age-appropriate and most of the time, I feel that my answers do not meet the expectation simply because I approach this topic on a very different angle.  So, what if I told you that we’ve got this whole conversation about age-appropriate dressing wrong? Today, I am sharing my “approach” to age-appropriate dressing to release you from the concept that your age is someway, somehow, restricting your choices.

Body Type

Dress your body type. Focus on how your clothes fit. Because our body changes with age, it’s important to understand the shapes and silhouettes that work best and how they evolve overtime.

Occasion

Once you’ve determined your best fit, be sure what you are wearing is appropriate for the occasion and your lifestyle.

Quality

Quality over quantity. Better quality is key, buy the best you can afford. Invest in the basics and staples you use frequently. Also, take time to care for your clothes properly.

 Age

With age comes a level of sophistication, so avoid youth-focused trends. Focus on composing a balanced, well proportionate look that is modern and highlights you favorite features.

Accessories

Invest in your Nothing elevates a look more than your bag and shoes. Investment is different for every person.  Maybe Stuart Weitzman and Jimmy Choo are your kind of splurges, or perhaps it’s Nine West and Sam Edelman, in any case always look to evolve the quality of your pieces. Same goes for handbags. Look for simple, clean designs. Avoid logos, studs, patchwork or anything that dangles like charms and chains.  You don’t want your bag to fight with your outfit. And don’t forget to wear your better jewelry every day.

Also, be cautious with patterns. the challenge with patterns is that there are so many in retail that look cheap and flimsy and do nothing to elevate your style so better use them with a light hand.

So what do you think about my approach to dress age-appropriate? Any other tips you would like to add? I believe that I summarize everything. I was hesitant about adding “to shop at the right department store” because that too has an impact to how you look. Shopping at F21 or Pretty Little things is definitely not a good option once you hit 30-35. And as a personal stylist, this is not a place I shop for my clients even if they are under 30.

Anyway, leave me your feedback below and remember to have fun and wear what makes you feel confident.  Do that, and you’ll create a timeless, always appropriate personal style no matter your age.

Thanks for stopping by.

XoXo,

Moumous

You always look classy no matter what you wear. I think fit is probably the number one tip and being cautious of what colors/patterns suit you.

aww thank you Mireille. Fit is definitively the number 1 tip to keep if you decide to forget the rest. Also, the colors you wear close to your face have a huge impact on your overall look.

I'm not a fan of the term "age-appropriate" because it tends to be used in articles telling women over a certain age what they shouldn't wear (basically clickbait). I agree that considering body shape, occasion and fabric quality are the key factors in dressing stylishly. A lot of the retailers aimed at younger consumers tend to be poor quality and rather skimpy, but not all young women want to dress like that. They also drive fast fashion which is terrible for the environment. I love how you've dressed up your jeans with the heels and sleeveless jacket! Thanks for linking up!

Thank you Emma. I wanted to approach the "age-appropriate" topic on a completely different angle. I am glad that you appreciate the content despite that you don't like the terms itself and frankly I don't like it either 🙂

I really like your approach to dressing your body type rather than the number of years you have been alive. Dressing for the occasion is important as well. I am generally always overdressed for any occasion, but that's just me. And even in my mid-40's I still prefer a much more youthful style only because it is my style…a little bit quirky and a little bit silly and a whole lot of I don't care what people think. If I feel good in what I'm wearing than that is really the most important test of all when it comes to personal style! Thanks for sharing and linking with me.

I find your style very unique Shelbee. I would classify you as artistic/creative with a hint of retro. It fits your personality well and you always look age-appropriate to me but I would agree that the classy people will get confused by your style hahaha :-). And as you said, feeling good in what you are wearing is definitely the most important thing. XoXo,
