Hi Everyone,
Do
you know the difference between black tie and white tie dress codes?
There are various formal and
informal options for dress codes. You could use the dress code, among other
things, to add to the atmosphere of an event. Your choice should match the target
group, the corporate culture, the objective and how the event is otherwise
interpreted. I wanted to share a few tips because I think that nowadays we tend to lose the concept and go for any jersey and/or shirt fabric at any event.
A
summary of the most common dress recommendations:
-
Informal / Semi Formal (after 5 and Business formal)
This is the least prescriptive dress code, but it doesn’t mean to say that
anything goes! Men have the choice of a suit or a shirt and tie. Women opt
for a dress, suit or trouser suit.
My pick for an informal/semi-formal look
-
Casual – Business Casual – Dressy casual
You will always get by with casual. Jeans or T-shirt, it doesn’t matter as
long as you feel right in it. Put a nice blazer on for a business casual look or simply a trouser and a pair of heels. However, I woul recommend to avoind the jeans and t-shirt for the dressy casual.
My picks for a casual looks (the one in the middle is my favorite)
-
Business attire or “Tenue de Ville”
Business attire can best be expressed as smart day wear; a suit for the men
and a suit or formal dress for the women. A hat is allowed (day time), but it
certainly isn’t a must.
My picks of tenue de ville – depending of the time I will lose or add a few items.
-
Black tie – Black tie Optional or black tie invited
Black tie requires a dinner suit for the men meaning a two or three-piece
black or colored suit and a pleated shirt. It may be topped off with a
breast-pocket handkerchief or a bow tie. The ladies may choose from a cocktail dress or a long evening dress with
mid-length gloves (I would definitely wear gloves if I am invited to a fancy event but feel free to miss it) . An excessively low-cut dress is out of place here. The black tie Optionalor
Black Tie Invited
gives you the option of wearing a tuxedo or formal dress,
but it should clue you into the formality of the event, meaning a dark suit and tie would be your other option. Women wear cocktail,
long dresses or dressy evening separates.
My picks for a Black Tie Event
-
White tie or gala
The white tie dress code is the most formal of all and does not come up
very often. The gentlemen wear a dress suit with a white bow tie. The
ladies wear a long evening dress and matching long gloves.
My picks for a gala event (would definitely go for a pair of gloves)
-
Festive Attire
Usually seen around the holidays, with the mood of the party being
Informal
or
Semi-Formal
. For her, it means to choose looks with a bit of sparkle or holiday
bent (i.e. a beaded sweater with black pants, a red silk blouse with a
black skirt).
My pick for a Christmas Festive attire
-
Evening attire
The gentlemen may choose between a dress suit or a dinner suit, the ladies
between a short or long evening dress. For myself, evening gown means that I can free my imagination to add this special touch that makes me look over the top
My Pick for an Evening Attire
-
Cocktail attire
The ladies wear a short elegant dress and are accompanied by their
husband/partner in a suit or jacket and trousers and wearing a tie.
-
Theme (Creative Black Tie)
In this instance you will dress in line with theme of the event. Give your
imagination free rein. Clothing accessories may also suffice here.
My picks for a masquerade theme party (Long dress will be more elegant here)
Special advice
At some events you will see the statement: “Don’t forget to bring
warm clothing” or “Bring rain wear” It is always advisable
to heed such advice.
