Hi everyone,
Happy Tuesday! I hope that you and your family are doing ok. For me, I’m getting accustomed to the new “normal life”: wake up, dress up but stay home, work, kids homeschooling, blogging, cooking etc. I also spend a lot more time on Instagram. That thing is addictive. I also want to be more active on TikTok but I am not there yet. I mean – not at all. lol. Aby is getting used to her new routine and the twins are still trying to tear the house completely down (like they haven’t done enough already). Anyway, I recently received a comment from one of my girlfriends that a personal stylist told her not to wear certain colors because they don’t flatter her skin complexion – period. As a personal stylist myself, I do not 100% support that and I will tell you why.
The #1 tips is not to wear color that doesn’t flatter your complexion next to your face because that color will clash on you and becomes the most obvious when it’s right up next to your face. It is recommended to wear them in your shoes, accessories and bottom. So here are the rules when it comes to colors that does not belong to your palette.
- Don’t wear them close/next to your face;
- Don’t wear them in solid colors (try them in prints-mixed with other colors that belongs to your color palette);
- Do wear them in shoe, handbag, or a skirt or pants. And pair them with a color that really pops on you.
However, What if you do have something – let’s say a top- that you love but doesn’t look good on you because of it’s color? Although I am 100% in agreement with above rules, I do believe there are a few tricks that you can do to make it work. Of course, the end result may not be as spectacular as if you wear wearing a color that belongs to your color palette but it won’t clash on you. So here’s my 3-ish tips if you must wear a color that doesn’t flatter your skin undertone:
- Jewelry: Wear a statement earrings (best) or a statement necklace: gold tone if you have warm undertone and silver tone if you have cool undertone. It will definitely take the attention away from the outfit.
- Lip Colors: Wear that one lipstick that makes your smile perfect: A bold lipstick (red-orange-pink) for warm undertone (MAC Ruby Woo is my best bet) or soft lipsticks for cool undertone : think of glossy baby pink, purple or nude. Also, remember to keep the makeup light and dewy.
- Add a scarf or a blazer in a color that really pops on you (or any other layering piece).
- Don’t forget that pair of sunglasses that makes you look like a million buck.
I personally have a warm undertone so the wear of navy blue and white can be tricky for me. Although, I can get away with some of the lighter shades of navy blue, I followed those tips and as you can see the results are pretty good. I also added a pop of color with the fuschia clutch.
So remember, I’m not telling you to wear colors you hate – as always, the most important thing is to wear what makes you feel good. If you have some nice pieces of clothing that are in a color that doesn’t look good on you – you can always try some of the tips listed above. I hope this just helps get around one of the barriers that stops up wearing so much fun stuff!

Great tips Moumouss.
I am a warm undertone. I try to wear some of the color that doesn't suit me (white or black) not too close of my face and if I do wear a bold lipstick: Ruby woo from MAC, En cinco de mayo or masquerade from Huda Beauty, 14 Blackberry Sorbet from Sephora collection and first of all, notion and arabesque from ColourPop.
Loving the nature landscape on your pictures, the new loose curl look as well and you look gorgeous!

I think that pink doesn't really go well on me because it doesn't suit my skin tone. However, I like to wear pink in statement pieces like jewelery and scarves because I can still wear the colour without it being too overbearing.

Good that you were able to find ways to incorporate colors you love into your outfit even if that color doesn't flatter your skintone. XO,

Great tips! A scarf seems the easiest way to do this but i like the idea of doing the color in a print like your dress.

Moumous, this dress is beautiful! And your shoes are so pretty, too. Great outfit. These are really wonderful tips for wearing less than flattering colors. I usually add a scarf if the top I want to wear is not the best color. But wearing colors we love even when they don’t flatter us can be done is so many other ways, like you said. Thanks for sharing and linking up.

Indeed Shelbee we just have to be creative and we will definitely find a lot of ways to wear a color that is not too flattering on us.

You look so pretty! I love, LOVE this outfit! The dress is too cute. Plus, these tips are super helpful. The only color that I feel I can't wear is blush, which of course is then the color I always gravitate towards in stores. I don't wear it anymore except for in my accessories, as you suggested! Other than that, I don't really pay much attention to warm/cool skin tones…I don't even know what mine is, although I would be interested to know!
