Sustainable Fashion – What it is & My personal opinion

Today, I wanted to discuss a little more about sustainable fashion as it is the way to improve your life, become more aware of the environment, help with savings and probably learn how to make the best of your wardrobe or simply help you create a wardrobe that takes all of the above into account while reflecting your style personality and taste for fashion. As per Wikipedia, sustainable fashion is a movement and process of fostering change to fashion products and the fashion system towards greater ecological integrity and social justice. Sustainable fashion concerns more than just addressing fashion textiles or products. It comprises addressing the whole system of fashion. 

“Premium and value fashion brands are developing new ways to create clothing out of recycled products in an effort to reduce waste. While buying vintage or used clothing has been on the rise, designers are working to develop practices that create less or no waste using materials from fresh ingredients or recycled goods. For example, Vin + Omi, a British design team that’s dressed former first lady Michelle Obama, has been harvesting its own crops for clothing from horseradish plants and chestnuts. The brands’ latest clothing collection includes items made from recycled paint containers—all in an effort to make products more sustainable. Other designers have begun using items such as old refrigerators and waste from the sea, with the hope that in the near future the fashion industry will be able to use fiber-to-fiber recycling—where a piece of clothing is unraveled and turned into a new piece of clothing. ” (source)

1. Decluttering is brilliant for so many reasons but from a sustainability point of view it allows others to enjoy the items that we no longer treasure
2. Learning how to care for clothes – proper storage, cleaning and mending (personally or using a local tailor).
3. Invest in quality items such as shoes, accessories, handbags and wardrobe basics – pieces that we love and want to keep forever.
4. Sourcing quality second-hand or vintage items negates the need for further natural resources.
5. Nurturing the mindset that if you don’t think you will wear it at least 30 times, don’t buy it…
6.  Renting occasion wear is a great option when you know it will only wear once. 
7. When you think about buying new, research and support sustainable clothing brands – they can be especially great for basics.

I will be honest and admit that I have never bought from an ethical brand before but it is something that I will be doing next time I am buying my wardrobe basics. In the meantime, I do follow religiously 1,2,3 & 5.
