Hi everyone,
It was just another bad hair day with the exception I was having a fun photographed try-on session @Lilophia. I came across this dress and instantly felt pretty. I then rushed in the dressing room to fix those messy hair. This color gives me life! How many times we want something to look good on us and although, it fits perfectly it doesn’t do anything for us but we are not quite sure why? Or you sometimes hear people talk about how blue is “their” color, or how they look awful in peach. Did you know that your skin undertone defines what colors actually looks good on you?
Understanding the real color of your skin is primarily about discovering your skin’s undertone which is the key to knowing the right shades of a color that works for you or simply the right foundation shade and creating a flawless makeup look.
Cool, warm, or neutral undertones are the colors that come through your skin from underneath the surface to affect its overall hue. It’s not about how light or dark your skin is; people of all skin colors, from very fair to deep, can have cool, warm and neutral undertones. Here’s what each of these terms means:
Cool: Hints of bluish, pink, or a ruddy complexion.
Warm: Skin skews yellow, sallow, peachy, or golden.
Neutral: Has no obvious overtones of pink or sallow skin, but rather the skin’s natural color is more evident.
Although these are the three main categories of skin undertones, some people do not belong to any of the three categories – and this category is called the Olive Undertone. People often tend to confuse olive undertone with neutral undertone. But, in reality, olive undertone is very different and has specific characteristics. It has a bit of yellow and greenish gray hue, and this is why it’s unique.
Examples of colors that flatter each undertone skin best
Cool undertone
Your best colors are on the cool end of the spectrum and are inspired by both the depths of the ocean and the depths of winter. Bright blues, emeralds, and deep purples will look great, along with frosty shades of lavender, ice blue, or pink. On the warm side, you can turn to ruby, bright rosy red, or super-pale yellows. With neutrals, you can rock cool gray, bright white, and navy. Try to avoid orange, tomato red, and strong yellows, which can clash with your skin completely. Celebrities I love with cool undertone: Nicole Kidman, Jennifer Hudson
Warm undertone
Your best colors are rich reflections of nature. On the warm side of the color wheel, you should turn to red, peach, coral, orange, amber, gold, and yellow. You also should look great when you wear “warmer” versions of cool colors, like olive, moss, orchid, and violet-red. Neutrals that are best for you include taupe, cappuccino, cream, and mushroom gray. Avoid chilly colors like icy blues or jewel tones like sapphire or amethyst because they can wash you out and make your skin look gray. Celebrities I love with warm undertone: Jessica Alba, Beyonce (by the way, Kim Kardashian has warm undertone as well)
Neutral undertone
As a neutral, you can wear anything on the color wheel — but it’s typically best to go for softened or muted versions of a color instead of the brighter ones. Choose colors like dusty pink, jade green, cornsilk yellow, or lagoon blue. For neutral colors, turn to off-whites, coffee, mid-range grays, and black. Oversaturated colors like electric blue and magenta can overwhelm your neutral skin tone, but there’s one big exception to this: never be afraid to wear a bright, true red — you will look amazing. Celebrities I love with neutral undertone: Julia Robert, Kerry Washington
Olive undertone
Your best colors are light peach, dusty pinks, soft rose, peony pink (blush-toned pinks look best for neutrals), placid blue, jade green, cameo green. Colors that are tough for you: Anything too bright or vibrant that can overwhelm, reds and yellows (if you do a yellow, try a soft version, like cornsilk or buff). Celebrities I love with olive undertone: Jessica Szohr, Rihanna
