What to Wear to a Formal or Semi-Formal Event- Sponsored by Michele Boutique

July 6, 2019 by Moumous |

When you get a party invitation for a “formal” event, it can be pretty confusing to decipher what that means. Is it cocktail-wear? Or black tie? And what does black tie even mean when it comes to ladies-wear?

If you receive an invitation to a pm Wedding, an after 6 event with “formal” or “semi-formal” dress code or any formal affairs, If unsure, follow these simple tips to dress up appropriately:

1. Remember your LBD

The Little Black Dress is a wardrobe stapler and one girl’s best friend. When in doubt always take comfort in slipping on your favorite LBD.

2. Wear Heels

It’s a NO FLATS event. I personally enjoy a nice 4″ to 6″ pair of heels. Please ensure they are comfy enough as all the mingling and socializing will be hard on your feet, especially when they’re wedged into tight little stilettos.

3. Overdress to Impress

It is better to overdress then under-dress-quoting my mom here- It is definitely better to overdress at a formal event where your outfits matters. Worst case scenario: you’ll be the best-dressed guest.

4. Make a Statement with Jewelry

Any outfit can be taken up a notch or two with fabulous statement jewelry. It helps make your outfit look put-together and stylish, but please if your statement piece is a necklace, make sure that you take the dress neckline into consideration. The nicest necklace may be of very bad taste if it does not flatter your neckline. Comment below if you would like to learn more about how to choose what necklace to wear based on your neckline.

5. Understand the Invitation

Take a minute and think about who sent you the invitation and what it’s for. It is ok to call your host ask for some details specially if dress-code is not clearly stated. But if the invitation comes from that extravaganza friend, you sure know that she’s expecting the “WOW factor” – just saying …

6. Keep Balance

An event described as “formal” most often means that it will be an elegant, refined affair. It is safe to say that anything too overwhelming won’t be welcomed, so keep your outfit appropriate. Sequins and lace can be stunning, as long as you compensate with a longer hem so that you avoid looking like you’re at a nightclub. If you want to try a daring neckline, make sure your dress is a neutral color like black, beige, or white. It’s all about balance!

7. Be Confident

The number one tip for dressing for a formal event is confidence. Whatever you decide to wear, own it loud and proud.

The white blazer reflects clarity, purpose, and a fresh chapter. And, the gold accents? A reminder that value comes from within, but shines brightest when you carry it with confidence.

For me, power dressing isn’t about looking intimidating, but about embodying authenticity. It’s the art of aligning how you present yourself on the outside with the strength and vision you hold within.

Styling is a calling that humbles you. Moments lik Styling is a calling that humbles you. Moments like this, kneeling on the floor, adjusting the delicate strap of a sandal, remind me that elegance isn’t just built in front of mirrors, but in the quiet details no one always sees.

Having the privilege to style fashion designer Stella Jean @stellajean_sj_ during her visit to Haiti @haifex.ht was more than work; it was a reminder of why I do what I do. It’s about service, attention, and the joy of seeing someone step into a look that makes them feel like their best self. The reward? That sparkle in their eyes when they stand tall, ready to take on the world.
